Coffee and red rice extract: What science really says about firmer skin

Sagging skin, cellulite, a complexion that feels less firm than it used to — this is one of the topics that almost no one talks about openly, even though it affects most people at some point. At Tonus, we rely on two active ingredients that are actually supported by studies: coffee extract (Coffea Arabica) and red rice extract. Here, we break down what the research shows — and what it does not.

Coffee extract: What the studies show

Caffeine is one of the most frequently studied plant-based active ingredients in the field of cellulite and skin tightening. Two studies are particularly relevant here:

Study 1 — Caffeine nano-cream, placebo-controlled (Pharmaceutics, 2026): In a randomized, double-blind study, an optimized 2% caffeine nano-cream was tested over 12 weeks. The cellulite score of participants in the active ingredient group decreased from an average of 3.96 to 2.50 (on a scale measuring severity), while the placebo group decreased from 3.88 to 2.83. The effect of the caffeine cream was therefore moderately stronger than that of the placebo group — the latter partially benefited from the massage effect during application itself.

Study 2 — In-vivo study, 2.5% caffeine cream (IIUM, 2018): 24 healthy subjects applied a 2.5% caffeine cream to their abdomen and upper arms twice daily for 12 weeks. Result: significant reduction in fat content and circumference after 4 and 8 weeks, respectively, and improved skin hydration after just 2 weeks. An important point for context: skin elasticity itself did not change significantly over the entire study period. Thus, caffeine demonstrably affects blood circulation, tissue, and circumference — not necessarily "firmness" in the narrower, elastic sense.

What this means for usage: Caffeine stimulates microcirculation and is traditionally used to support a firmer-looking complexion. The body of evidence supports an effect on circumference, tissue structure, and skin appearance with regular use over several weeks — it does not support claims of "overnight tightening" or a change in skin elasticity in a medical sense.

Red rice extract: What the studies show

Compared to white or brown rice, red rice (Oryza sativa) contains significantly more secondary plant compounds, particularly proanthocyanidins, catechin, and oryzanol.

Study — Yodkeeree et al., 2018 (Journal of Evidence-Based Complementary & Alternative Medicine): In this laboratory study, the effect of proanthocyanidin-rich red rice extract on human skin fibroblasts (cell culture) was investigated. Result: The extract inhibited the activity of collagenase and MMP-2 — both enzymes that break down the body's own collagen — while simultaneously increasing the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid in the studied cells.

Important context: These results come from an in-vitro study, meaning cell cultures in a laboratory, not a clinical study on living humans. This is a recognized first step in active ingredient research and demonstrates a plausible mechanism of action — but it is different from clinical evidence of visible skin changes in users. So far, we lack clinical studies that directly prove the effect of red rice extract on firmer skin in humans.

Why we combine both active ingredients

Coffee extract and red rice extract work at different points: caffeine acts more in the short term on blood circulation, tissue, and circumference, while the proanthocyanidins contained in red rice work at a cellular level to preserve collagen — i.e., more long-term and structural. Together with volcanic mud, which provides deep cleansing, the result is a formula that addresses multiple levels simultaneously, rather than just targeting a single aspect.

Realistic expectations

Based on the available studies:

  • After 1–2 weeks: Skin feels fresher and better circulated due to the massage during soaping — no visible difference in skin appearance to be expected.
  • After 4–8 weeks: With regular use (2–3 times a week), circumference and tissue structure can change measurably, according to studies.
  • After 8–12 weeks and beyond: Consistent use is a prerequisite for the effects observed in the studies. Cellulite and skin sagging have many causes (genetics, hormonal balance, connective tissue structure, age) — a body soap cannot "cure" these, but it can provide support.

At Tonus, we consciously do not promise "overnight tightening" or the elimination of cellulite — the honest expectation is supportive care based on active ingredients for which there is actual research.
